PPU Storefront in Pine PlainsOur Mission

Pine Plains United is committed to helping the Town of Pine Plains preserve its rural character as it grows and to protecting it from the adverse effects of commercial and residential development inconsistent with a rural agricultural community.

History

Pine Plains United was founded in January 2005 in response to a growing concern about the large-scale development coming to Pine Plains from outside developers. Since that time, we’ve been working to support the town boards in their effort to represent the interests of the town as expressed by the Town’s Comprehensive Plan (PDF document) and the growing public concern.

By informing ourselves, informing the public and voicing our collective concerns, our intention is to have a say in how Pine Plains grows. We supported the Town Board in enacting a revised Comprehensive Town Plan and some of our members served on the Zoning Commission appointed in March 2005. We successfully lobbied the town Board to enact a Moratorium on Development in January 2006 to allow the Zoning Commission time to complete its work. The Zoning Commission’s work eventually led to the enactment of a zoning law in October, 2009 after undergoing many revisions and public hearings. Our experts and members gave testimony and detailed comments on all sections of the law, many of which resulted in changes that were incorporated into the final version.  We lobbied for a full environmental study for the Parkview Development and have followed and commented upon the various proposals submitted by the Village Green and Carvel developers since we began our work. In addition, we have hired legal and planning consultants to further inform and advise us as we engage the planning process. This includes providing the Planning and Town Boards with legal opinions and professional reports as necessary.
